Popcorn Popping!

Popcorn doesn’t seem like a topic for this page at first glance, but we had a bit of fun in the kitchen today that proved just how much more fun life is with dogs underfoot. I was doing a test run of a popcorn treat for a birthday later this week that required popping it first with the air popper then adding some yummy toppings. I had picked up a giant jug of popcorn kernels from Costco the last time I was there and this was the first time I had used any out of it. After the initial “pfft” from peeling off the plastic sealing it shut, I scooped out some and dumped it into the popper. Hearing the familiar whir as I turned it on, I stepped over the dogs as I manuvered around the island in the kitchen. I was pulling a spoon out of the drawer when I heard the first pop. The bowl was in place to catch them, so I didn’t think twice about it until I heard a hard ping of something hitting the bowl, followed by louder popping sounds. As I turned back to the island,  I saw what was causing the unusually loud popping. The popcorn was exploding after shooting out of the popper & those mini explosions were sending popcorn all over the kitchen counter and floor! It took the two dogs, who always hold vigil in the kitchen if there is the slightest possibility of food dropping, about 2.3 seconds to realize treats were raining down onto the free range of the floor! For the next 15 minutes, while I was popping enough corn for the recipe I was following, those dogs thought exploding popcorn was the best game ever. I was in stitches watching them try to catch some mid-air and using their noses to find the ones that had skittered away under the toe kicks.

For the record, I don’t feed corn to my dogs, this was just a fun, isolated event involving unexpected, exploding kernels. What I normally give them for treats are *these,  made of wholesome, healthy ingredients for dogs with lamb and chicken. They are especially good to use when we are training them because they are high-value treats, meaning the dogs like them so much, they pay attention and do their best with the task at hand to get their tasty rewards.
